What is Standard Time in Industrial Engineering and Why Is It Important?

What is Standard Time?

Standard Time is the time allowed to complete a specific task under defined working conditions, including appropriate allowances for fatigue, personal needs, and unavoidable delays.

It helps establish a realistic expectation for how long a properly trained operator should take to complete the work.

In simple terms

If an operator’s observed time is 50 seconds, that does not automatically mean the standard should be 50 seconds.

Industrial Engineers consider:

  • Observed Time
  • Performance Rating
  • Allowances

to determine the appropriate Standard Time.

Simple Example

Suppose:

Observed Time = 50 seconds

Performance Rating = 110%

Normal Time:

50 × 1.10 = 55 seconds

If the allowance is 10%:

Standard Time:

55 × 1.10 = 60.5 seconds

So the standard becomes approximately 61 seconds per unit.

Why It Matters

Standard time is used for:

  • Manpower planning
  • Production capacity calculation
  • Target setting
  • Labor costing
  • Line balancing
  • Production planning
  • Productivity measurement

Important Insight

A standard should be challenging but achievable.

If the standard is too loose, productivity may appear poor.

If it is unrealistically tight, operators may experience excessive fatigue, quality problems, or unsafe working conditions.

How to Establish Standard Time

  • Define the work method.
  • Observe multiple cycles.
  • Record accurate task times.
  • Apply performance rating where appropriate.
  • Add relevant allowances.
  • Validate the standard with actual production conditions.
  • Review it when the process or method changes.

Benefits

  • More accurate capacity planning
  • Better manpower estimation
  • Consistent production targets
  • Improved labor costing
  • Better line balancing
  • More reliable productivity measurement

Practical Insight

A good standard time is not simply a stopwatch number.

It is a carefully established benchmark that connects method, performance, allowances, and realistic working conditions.
