What is Production Mix?
Production Mix refers to the combination and quantity of different products a factory produces during a specific period.
A factory may have enough total capacity, but the product mix can still create a capacity problem.
In simple terms
Suppose a factory produces:
🔹 Product A
🔹 Product B
🔹 Product C
Each product may require different:
- Processing time
- Machines
- Manpower
- Materials
- Quality checks
Therefore, producing 1,000 units of Product A is not necessarily equivalent to producing 1,000 units of Product B.
Simple Example
A machine has 480 minutes/day available.
Product A requires 2 minutes/unit.
Product B requires 5 minutes/unit.
If the daily requirement is:
A = 100 units → 200 minutes
B = 50 units → 250 minutes
Total required time:
200 + 250 = 450 minutes
The machine has only 30 minutes of remaining capacity.
If the product mix changes to more Product B, the same machine can quickly become a constraint.
Why It Matters
Poor product-mix planning can cause:
- Machine overload
- Uneven workloads
- Excess WIP
- Material shortages
- Delivery delays
- Increased overtime
Important Insight
Total demand alone does not determine capacity requirements.
The mix of products can significantly change the workload on machines and people.
How to Analyze Production Mix
- List products and required quantities.
- Determine standard time for each product.
- Identify required machines and work centers.
- Calculate total workload.
- Compare workload with available capacity.
- Identify overloaded resources.
- Adjust the production sequence or plan where necessary.

When planning production, don’t ask only:
“How many units do we need to make?”
