What is Production Planning and Control?
Production Planning and Control (PPC) is the process of deciding what to produce, how much to produce, when to produce it, and how to control the production process to meet customer requirements.
In simple terms
PPC connects:
Customer Demand → Production Plan → Materials → Machines → Manpower → Production → Delivery
Simple Example
A company receives an order for 10,000 units to be delivered in 10 days.
PPC needs to determine:
- Daily production requirement
- Available machine capacity
- Required manpower
- Material availability
- Production sequence
- Expected completion date
If the required output is 1,000 units/day but the available capacity is only 800 units/day, the gap must be identified before production starts.
Why it matters
Poor production planning can lead to:
- Machine idle time
- Material shortages
- Excess WIP
- Overtime
- Missed delivery dates
- Unbalanced workloads
Important Insight
A production plan is useful only when it is realistic.
Planning 1,500 units when the available capacity can produce only 1,000 units does not improve performance it simply creates a future production gap.
Key Activities in PPC
- Demand analysis
- Production planning
- Material planning
- Capacity checking
- Scheduling
- Dispatching
- Monitoring actual production
- Correcting deviations
Benefits
- Better capacity utilization
- Improved delivery performance
- Reduced production delays
- Better material coordination
- Lower WIP
- Improved resource utilization
Practical Insight
Good PPC is not just about creating a production schedule.
It is about continuously asking:
“Can we actually achieve this plan with the resources available?”
When planning and shop-floor reality are connected, production becomes much more predictable.
