Man-hour

Here two workers are working on to built a wall with bricks. They are almost done and they are going to finish their work… : ). Before they finish I will try to understand you the concept of Man-hour quickly.

What is man-hour?

Man-hour is a unit which is used to express the manual time required for completing a work. Suppose the work content of a job is one man-hour, that means one person will take one hour to complete the job.

Here is your reading assistant. Please press the play button above for hearing the audio of the article and read along with the audio.

This can be any type of work such as drilling, a turning operation in the lathe, building a ship, manual assembly, clerical jobs, etc. Please don’t confused with this picture that only two persons can be allocated to a work, it can be one or above one.

Example – Man-hour

Here I will explain how to calculate how much manual time is required to built a wall, through the concept of man-hour.

Suppose these two gentlemen started their work early in the morning, today at 07:30 am. (They are clever guys since they have started early to avoid severe sun). And they ends their work at 11:30 am. Here the total time required for them to built a wall is 4 hrs.

And the Man-hours required for building the wall is 4 x 2 = 8. Please note that in these 4 hours they might have taken a break for drinking water, using washroom, taken rest, and these all to be considered as part of their work. Also this allowed break time can be calculated, which depends on the type of work, which i will explain in another post.

Ok, we have done with calculating the manual time required for building a wall. And here is the equation.

One thing to be noted in this equation is, if the manual time required is in hours the working time should also be in the hours. And Its not only the Man-hour, but can be Man-minutes, Man-days, Man-months, etc.. according to the type of the work, duration of the work and also where the data of manual time is used.

Example of man-minute : in the above example man minutes taken for building the wall is 480 man-minutes, which is got by multiplying hours by 60.

Oh no wait a minute!

What’s the time now…

11:35 am

Then they should have finished their work…

Hhhaa ha there they are

Have you noticed their happiness…
