What is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics is the science of designing workstations, tools, equipment, and tasks to fit the worker.
The goal is to make work safer, more comfortable, and more efficient.
In simple terms
Instead of asking:
“How can the operator adapt to the workstation?”
Ergonomics asks:
“How can we design the workstation so the operator can work effectively with less strain?”
Simple Example
An operator performs a repetitive assembly task 600 times per shift.
The workbench is too low, so the operator repeatedly bends forward.
One movement may seem insignificant.
But repeated hundreds of times can contribute to:
- Fatigue
- Discomfort
- Reduced productivity
- Higher risk of injury
- Inconsistent work performance
Raising the workstation to a suitable height can reduce unnecessary bending.
Key Ergonomic Factors
Posture Avoid awkward or sustained positions.
Force Reduce excessive pushing, pulling, lifting, or gripping.
Repetition Identify highly repetitive tasks.
Workstation height Match the task and operator requirements.
Tool design Make tools easy and comfortable to use.
Reach distance Keep frequently used materials within easy reach.
Important Insight
Ergonomics is not only a worker-safety topic.
Poor ergonomics can also create:
Fatigue → slower work → more errors → reduced productivity
So ergonomic improvement can support both people and process performance.
How to Improve Ergonomics
- Observe the operator performing the actual task.
- Identify awkward postures and unnecessary movements.
- Measure reach, force, repetition, and task duration.
- Improve workstation and material positioning.
- Involve operators when designing the solution.
- Monitor the results after implementation.
Benefits
- Reduced physical strain
- Lower fatigue
- Better operator comfort
- Fewer ergonomic risks
- Improved consistency
- Potential productivity improvement
Practical Insight
A well-designed workstation should make the correct way of working the easiest way of working.
Good ergonomics is not about making work easier by reducing standards.
It is about designing the process better.
