Career Growth Guidance - Know Industrial Engineering

“Just increase the speed.”

That was the Plant Manager’s answer.

The customer order had increased, and the factory was struggling to meet the target.

The team increased the machine speed.

Output went up.

Everyone was happy.

For a while.

Then the rejection rate started climbing.

Operators were rushing.

Minor breakdowns became frequent.

Rework increased.

By the end of the week, the factory was producing more parts…

but shipping fewer good parts.

An engineer finally asked:

“What if speed was never the real problem?”

They checked the process.

The machine was already running close to its practical limit.

The real loss was happening between operations.

Material was waiting.

Operators were waiting.

Inspection was creating a queue.

The bottleneck was not working fast enough.

So instead of increasing the speed of every machine, they improved the slowest part of the process.

The result?

More good products reached the customer without pushing everyone harder.

The lesson is simple:

When output is low, the first answer should not always be “work faster.”

First find where the flow is being held back.

A faster machine cannot fix a slow process.

Now or Never
