What is Gauge R&R?
Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gauge R&R) is a measurement system analysis method used to determine how much variation comes from the measurement system rather than the parts being measured.
It evaluates two important sources of variation:
- Repeatability – Variation when the same person measures the same part repeatedly using the same instrument.
- Reproducibility – Variation between different people measuring the same parts.
In simple terms
Imagine three quality inspectors measuring the diameter of the same metal component.
Inspector A records 10.02 mm.
Inspector B records 10.08 mm.
Inspector C records 9.97 mm.
Are these differences caused by the component, the measuring instrument, or the way each inspector measures?
Gauge R&R helps investigate this question.
Simple Example
A shaft has a specified diameter of 10.00 ± 0.10 mm.
Several inspectors measure the same set of shafts, and their readings vary considerably.
Even if the instrument appears to work correctly, the measurement system may not be reliable enough for making quality decisions.
A Gauge R&R study helps quantify the measurement variation.
Why It Matters
Measurement results influence:
- Product acceptance or rejection
- Process capability studies
- SPC and control charts
- Root cause investigations
- Process improvement decisions
Important Insight
You cannot reliably improve a process if you cannot reliably measure it.
A poor measurement system can make a good process look bad or allow a bad process to appear acceptable.
How to Conduct a Gauge R&R Study
- Select representative parts covering the expected process variation.
- Select trained appraisers.
- Have each appraiser measure the same parts multiple times.
- Randomize the measurement order where practical.
- Analyze repeatability, reproducibility, and total measurement variation.
- Compare the results against the applicable acceptance criteria.
- Improve the instrument, method, or training if needed.
Benefits
- More trustworthy inspection results
- Better consistency between inspectors
- More reliable process capability analysis
- Reduced risk of incorrect acceptance or rejection
- Stronger quality-control decisions
Practical Insight
Before asking, “Is our product within specification?”, ask:
“Can our measurement system determine that accurately and consistently?”
Reliable quality decisions begin with reliable measurement.
