Takt Time

Takt time is the time in which a manufacturer should produce a product so as to satisfy customer demand. This can be called as pulse of lean manufacturing.

How to calculate Takt time

Suppose a manufacturer have a customer who wants 500 units per day. Presently the manufacturer works in two shifts and working time per shift is 420 minutes. Here takt time can be calculated as follows.

No of units to be produced per shift = 500/2

                                                       = 250 nos

Takt time = 420/250

                  = 1.68 minutes.

This means the manufacturer should produce a unit in every 1.68 minutes of his production time.

We have developed an takt time calculator, for easy calculations. Have a look.

So the formula for takt time is, working time per shift / demand per shift

Please note that working time per shift is excluding the time for lunch break, tea break and planned maintenance time, if any.

Uses of takt time

This gives a target to the manufacturer to align all his all operation within 1.68 minutes. Otherwise he cannot satisfy his customer demand.

Takt time is used for balancing the assembly line. You can read the article on line balancing for knowing more about it.

Another application of takt time is to calculate the no of work station required in an assembly line. This is described in the article how to calculate no of work station from takt time.

You can also note one more point, if bottleneck cycle time in a assembly line is below takt time the assembly line can satisfy its customer demand. If not, it will not meet customer demand and bottleneck need to be reduced to below takt time.
