Isometric Drawing In AutoCAD

Isometric drawing is a method of making 3D drawings using 2D coordinates. So in this article we are going to make a Isometric Drawing In AutoCAD, which has been made using x and y coordinates only but it looks like it’s a 3D drawing. So we will make this drawing with the Isometric command in AutoCAD 2020.

AutoCAD is a well known software now. And it is not just about 2D drawings only. We can actually make our 3D drawings in AutoCAD using the 2D commands only so this is what we are going to learn about in this article.

Isometric Drawing

To turn  Isometric ON, click on this isometric draft button on this status toggle.

Turning Isometric ON

You can also use command to turn on isometric. For that Press DS and Enter. A window will pop-up, from that select snap and grid tab and make sure Isometric snap radio button is checked. Click OK to exit drafting settings window.

Check Isometric Snap

When we will turn it on its corresponding grid setting changes.

Grid Setting Changes

To see the grid setting, click on the grid mode and turn it ON.

Grid Mode ON

When we will click on this arrow which is just beside this iso-draft, we will see these 3 options. We have Isoplane Right, Isoplane Left and Isoplane Top.

3 Options

Click on Isoplane Top and and we will see that the Isoplane changes. Similarly we can click on Isoplane Right and Left and the plane will keep on changing.

Isoplane Left
Isoplane Right

So to make this drawing, select Isoplane Top and start with the poly line command. Just click on the polyline and click at a random point to start making a drawing. If you want to learn more about “How to draw a line in AutoCAD” then click on the below article:

Isoplane Top

While  making this drawing there is this tracking vector which is with respect to the isoplane that we have selected. Vertical tracking vector represents y axis and we can also turn Ortho mode ON and now we will be now able to make lines only in horizontal and vertical direction.

Vertical Tracking

Now draw the rectangle of size 100 x 60 using polyline command.

Select the copy command and select the rectangle and move it upwards at a height of 50 units.

So we have these two rectangles, now join all these points with the help of line.

Joining Points

Now we have to make the cylinder on the face of this cuboid. We cannot do that with the circle command so we have to select ellipse command

Ellipse Command

After selecting the ellipse command we will see the isocircle at the bottom of our screen, we then have to click on this command and specify the centre.

Click On Isocircle

Now we have to change the isoplane so I will shift my isoplane to isoplane right. We can also press F5 key to switch the planes.

While drawing cylinder, again we will click on the copy command and will make a cylinder by copying the circle forward.

Now select the line and connect the quadrant points of the circles so as to get the figure.

Making cylinder

To make it more realistic, trim the extra lines with the help of trim command.

Trimming Lines

After trimming, you will get the desired figure.
