In this article we will discuss and learn manpower calculation using takt time. You also get an downloadable excel template at the end of this article.
The importance of manpower calculation using takt time is, this method is very simple and quicker, if we know takt time. This is derived from basics of manpower calculation which is explained in the article manpower requirement calculation.
Ok let’s move to our topic.
How to calculate manpower using takt time.
That’s very simple.
Just divide the total work content in man minutes by the takt time in minutes. You can refer formula in below picture,

Example calculation
Let’s take the same example we have used for doing manpower calculation in our previous article.
In that example,
Total work content in man minutes was = 5 + 8 + 6 = 19 man minutes
Takt time was equal to = (420 + 420) / 5000
= 0.168 minutes
If want to know how to calculate takt time, you can refer our article on takt time.
Now we have everything for manpower calculation using takt time.
But, wait minute….
It’s always safe to consider some efficiency loss in calculating manpower.
Let’s consider 85% efficiency. That means 15% is lost.
Now, we need to adjust takt time to consider this efficiency loss.
Takt time correction = 0.168 x 85%
= 0.1428 minutes
(Note : For example suppose your process has 15% rejection. And your present demand per day is 100. Now you need to produce 115 products for giving 100 products to customers. So our actual demand is increased from 100 to 115. Hence the takt time decreases.)
Manpower required is equal to
=19/0.1428
=133.05
Rounding up it will be 134 manpower per day.
You can see that we have got same result in previous method.

This is wrong. It’s 100/85%=117,65. Please don’t use fifth grade math, it’s lean six sigma level we’re supposed to be talking about.
Thanks Chris. we clearly understand our mistake.
We will correct this as soon as possible.
You are correct 0.85 of 115 is not 100. It’s less than 100. And we will not be able to fulfill customer requirement as in the example.
Don’t know how this happened. It should not be.
