What is Resource Utilization?

Resource Utilization measures how effectively available manufacturing resources are being used compared with their available capacity.

Resources can include:

• Machines
• Manpower
• Production lines
• Tools
• Workstations
• Facilities

In simple terms

If a machine is available for 8 hours but actually produces for only 6 hours, its utilization is:

6 ÷ 8 × 100 = 75%

The remaining 25% represents time that needs further investigation.

Simple Example

A production line has:

Available time: 480 minutes/shift
Actual productive time: 400 minutes

Utilization:

400 ÷ 480 × 100 = 83.3%

The important question is not simply why utilization is 83.3%.

It is:

“What happened to the remaining 80 minutes?”

Important Insight

High utilization does not always mean high performance.
