What Is Labour Productivity?
Labour productivity measures how much output is produced using a given amount of labour.
In manufacturing, it helps industrial engineers understand whether manpower is being utilized effectively and identify opportunities to improve production without unnecessarily increasing headcount.
Labour Productivity Formula
Labour Productivity = Total Output ÷ Total Labour Hours
Output can be measured in pieces, kilograms, assemblies, or another suitable unit.
Simple Manufacturing Example
An assembly department produces 800 components during an 8-hour shift with 10 operators.
- Total output = 800 components
- Total labour hours = 10 × 8 = 80 labour-hours
- Labour productivity = 800 ÷ 80 = 10 components per labour-hour
This means the department produces an average of 10 components for every labour-hour used.
How Can Labour Productivity Be Improved?
- Reduce unnecessary movement: Keep tools and materials close to workstations.
- Improve line balancing: Distribute work according to task times and production demand.
- Reduce machine waiting time: Ensure materials and equipment are available when needed.
- Standardize work methods: Reduce variation between operators and shifts.
- Improve quality at the source: Avoid spending labour hours on rework and repeated inspections.
- Develop operator skills: Train employees to perform tasks safely and consistently.
Important Insight
Higher output does not always mean better productivity.
If output increases because employees work excessive overtime, quality deteriorates, or safety is compromised, the improvement may not be sustainable.
Productivity should be evaluated alongside quality, safety, delivery performance, and working conditions.
Practical Insight
Suppose a factory produces 800 components using 80 labour-hours. After improving workstation layout and material supply, it produces 880 components using the same 80 labour-hours.
- Before improvement: 10 components per labour-hour
- After improvement: 11 components per labour-hour
- Productivity improvement: 10%
The factory increases output without adding labour hours.
The objective of industrial engineering is not simply to make people work faster, but to eliminate barriers that prevent them from working efficiently.
