Drafting

Drafting in the field of design and engineering is the process of creating precise technical drawings and plans that include detailed specifications, dimensions, and structural details.

Traditionally, drafting was carried out manually using tools such as pencils, drafting boards, and rulers. However, with the passage of time, computer-aided design (CAD) has revolutionized the drafting process.

What is a CAD Software ?

CAD, short for computer-aided design, refers to the use of computer software and tools to assist in the creation, modification, and optimization of technical drawings and designs. It provides a digital platform where designers and engineers can create accurate and detailed drafts, eliminating the limitations of traditional manual drafting.

CAD is very important mainly for the field such as engineering, architecture, manufacturing and design. The main important reasons of using CAD are:

Its accuracy and precision. It allows us to create highly accurate and precise representation of objects and structures and this helps in minimizing errors and ensures quality and avoids costly rework.

CAD also helps in proper visualization of ideas and concepts. It actually transforms our ideas into reality. Through this, our concepts are refined, evaluated and communicated effectively before investing into its production or construction.

CAD also provides us the information for the maintenance and repair of the object. And accurate drafting enables the replication of objects or structures allowing for consistent manufacturing or construction processes.

Overview of Each Software

There are so many drafting software available in the market having their own set of features, their own capabilities and their industries. In the below session we shall discuss some important points.

AutoCAD by Autodesk

AutoCAD is one of the most widely used drafting software nowadays. It is widely used for 2D drafting, 3D modeling, and general-purpose design and it allows the users to create precise technical drawings, models and architectural plans. AutoCAD is commonly used by engineers, architectures and construction firms .

AutoCAD was developed by Autodesk for 2D and 3D drafting and design. This software supports a wide range of file formats and provides the features like parametric modeling annotation and collaborative workflows. Already many articles have been written related to AutoCAD which you can read on.

SolidWorks

SolidWorks is a 3D computer aided design (CAD) software whose main focus is on mechanical design and engineering. It provides features for modeling, simulation and analysis, hence making it a perfect fit for mechanical industry.

It is easy to use and is good with integration with other engineering software.

SketchUp

SketchUp is a user-friendly 3D modelling software that is more popular amongst architectures and interior designers. It is a tool that helps in creating floor plans, designs and helps in creating 3D models.

It has a user friendly interface hence making it convenient and easy to use. This software creates amazing interiors.

Revit

Revit is a building information modeling (BIM) software by Autodesk which is designed specifically for the architectures, engineering construction industries. It helps the users to create detailed 3D models of buildings and infrastructures which are then used to generate and perform analysis and manage the project data.

Revit is used for collaboration and enables the information sharing across different projects.

Autodesk offers free trial to its products like AutoCAD, Revit, Fusion 360 & others.
Even Bentley offer a trial- but limited to 20 days to its product of MicroStation and others.
