“Another record! You have beaten last month’s production target.”

The Plant Head was delighted.

The assembly team had increased its daily output by 18%.

The supervisor expected a bonus announcement.

Instead, the Plant Head asked for the dispatch report.

The numbers told a different story.

Production was up 18%.

But customer deliveries were almost unchanged.

Finished goods inventory had grown sharply.

And the team working at the next process was struggling to keep up.

“How can we produce so much more without shipping more?” the Plant Head asked.

The supervisor explained that every operator had been encouraged to maximize individual output.

So they did exactly that.

They produced whenever their machines were available, even when the next process was already full.

Nobody was breaking the rules.

They were simply chasing the wrong target.

The factory changed its performance measures.

Instead of rewarding output alone, it began tracking completed customer orders, overall flow and inventory buildup.

The team still cared about productivity.

But now they understood how their work affected everyone else.

This is a lesson in systems thinking and performance measurement.

A department can hit every target and still hurt the performance of the whole factory if its goals are not aligned with the bigger picture.

What gets measured gets attention.

Make sure you’re measuring what actually matters.
