“The procedure says to do it this way. But I know a faster way.”
The supervisor was ready to issue a warning.
The operator had been using a different method for months.
And surprisingly, he was producing more parts than anyone else on the shift.
The Industrial Engineer decided to watch him work.
The difference was simple.
The standard procedure required the operator to pick up a tool, turn around, complete the operation, and return the tool to its original place.
The operator had rearranged his workstation.
The tool was now within easy reach.
He had removed unnecessary movement without skipping any safety or quality steps.
The engineer timed both methods.
The operator’s method was faster and less tiring.
But there was a problem.
Nobody else knew about his improvement.
If he went on leave, the team would return to the old method.
So the engineer tested the new method, confirmed that quality and safety were maintained, and updated the standard work instruction.
Then the team trained everyone.
One operator’s improvement became the new standard for the entire line.
This is the power of Kaizen and standard work.
Improvements should not remain personal tricks. Once a better method is proven, it should become the shared way of working.
A good operator finds a better way.
A good factory makes sure everyone can use it.
